Decide the location

Most of us probably know where we’d build our dream home, but if you don’t, now’s the time to find out. Florida’s year-round temperate climate, Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico beaches, world-renowned attractions and outdoor recreation options are enticing to many dream-home aspirants.

Master-planned communities such as those developed by ICI Homes and those where we’re preferred builders also are great options. They offer many resident amenities and tend to be convenient to services, shopping, dining and entertainment.

If you’re a traveler, proximity to a major airport might be key to your dream home’s location.

Know what you want

Having blueprints, floor plans or designs choices at the ready can be a great place to start. If you’re not there yet, begin with ideas of what kind of dream home appeals to you and yours.

Beach cottage? Horse farm? Room for outdoor living spaces as large as your interior spaces?

A yard? None?

Another factor is how you’ll use your dream home. If it’s a family vacation spot, you’ll want it to  handle social occasions, wet bathing suits, or spring-break teenagers without much unnecessary maintenance. If it’s a retirement dream home, you may want that gourmet kitchen, walk-in wine closet, and expansive outdoor living areas.

Or, you may plan to travel non-stop. Perhaps a maintenance-free villa or townhome is the exact answer for that lock-up-and-go lifestyle.

Determine your must-haves

And, your don’t-needs. Maybe a home office is crucial right now in your current abode, but it might be the last feature you want in a dream home.

The key is knowing why you want a dream home and how you’d like to use it. If you don’t know those details, grab a notepad or your favorite digital device and create some lists. Now’s the time to think splurges, so add that outdoor shower!
