If you need another reason to move to east central Florida, we at ICI Homes have one. The folks at Realtor.com® have compiled their annual list of the top 10 most affordable U.S. beach towns, and our hometown — Daytona Beach — is No. 3.
Living near a beach is more appealing than ever as we emerge from a global health crisis. After months of social isolation and working and schooling from home, many buyers are leaving more crowded, expensive urban areas, or seeking a more temperate climate with year-round outdoor recreation.
Florida’s warmth, beauty and amazing natural resources delivers affordable beach living for any budget and lifestyle. But let’s see how Daytona Beach made the 2021 Realtor.com® list.
What’s the criteria
Each year, Realtor.com® staffers cull data to compile the 10 most affordable beach towns in the U.S. Per the organization’s website, the criteria emphasizes places where your dollar goes further, and there are plenty of easy-to-reach beaches, and many other activities or entertainment.
For this year’s list, Realtor.com® staffers examined median list prices of homes in more than 1,300 coastal towns between May 2020-April 2021. They then used U.S. Census Data to find towns with beach-oriented industries, shopping, dining and entertainment options — all positive attributes for many new Florida home buyers.
Realtor.com® folks selected only one town per state to include as many states as possible.
Atlantic City, New Jersey No. 1 for 2021. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is No. 2.
Which leads us to…
Why Daytona Beach is No. 3
It sports a median list price of $239,050 on the 2021 Realtor.com® list of top 10 most affordable beach towns. But affordability isn’t the only reason Daytona Beach is a great place to live.
It’s the home of “The World’s Most Famous Beach,” with nearly endless opportunities for beaching, boating and other water sports. Long a destination for its sand and surf, Daytona Beach also is the home of three major institutions of higher learning — Daytona State College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and historic Bethune-Cookman University — and to NASCAR and Daytona International Speedway.
Daytona Beach also is centrally located near the intersection of Interstates 95 and 4, with Florida’s world-renowned attractions only a short drive away.
