Drop Zones
Or mud rooms, given your preferred nomenclature. These spaces normally appear near entries to and from a garage. We all “drop” keys, purses, sports equipments, backpacks, rain gear, coats — you name it — on our way in and out.
Creating an attractive design with wall hooks, shelves and spaces to tuck everyday items is a sure clutter-buster for most of us, especially if kids and pets are in the household.

Built-ins
You might be familiar with this concept depending how you envision a drop zone or mud room. But, the same idea of handy built-in seats and shelves in a drop zone can work elsewhere too.
Think bookcases, drawers, cabinets and desks. Built-ins also save space because they’re “built into” and along a room’s wall, leaving plenty of space for comfy furniture or other furnishings.
Nooks and crannies
If you haven’t explored this option, unused spaces under staircases are storage gold mines.
Instead of drywalling over those empty spaces, turn them into a bespoke closet, or customized doggie den for Fido’s bed, water and food bowls.
Alternately, leave the under-staircase area open and tuck a built-in drop zone there. Other possibilities: an art gallery for favorite items, or space to display a beloved piece of furniture.
