The kickoff of summer — aka the month of June — also marks the unofficial season of new beginnings, transitions and celebratory life events.
In other words, graduations, weddings, new jobs and new homes. Moving is a common denominator for most folks making those and similar transitions, and since many of us have been there too, we at ICI Homes are sharing a study from the financial website WalletHub.
Atlanta, Georgia captured the top ranking followed by Orlando (second), Salt Lake City, Utah (third), Tampa (fourth) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (fifth), Portland, Maine (sixth), Charleston, South Carolina (seventh), Austin, Texas (eighth), Miami (ninth) and Knoxville, Tennessee (10th).
Here’s more on WalletHub’s top-10 U.S. cities for job hunters launching new careers.
The methodology
WalletHub researchers examined more than 180 cities nationwide for attributes conducive to a starting a career. Their emphasis was geared toward recent graduates seeking first jobs, but the information can be helpful for anyone changing jobs or beginning a new career.
Factors used in researchers’ evaluations included viable transportation options, the supply of job openings, entry-level salaries, housing prices, costs of living, and quality-of-life variables such as recreation and cultural, arts and sporting scenes. Researchers also analyzed how companies were rated by the career website Glassdoor.
Orlando earned its No. 2 ranking thanks to one of the nation’s best unemployment rates, a high number of entry-level jobs, and job openings with companies highly rated on Glassdoor. The city’s high annual median income-growth rate of 8.2 percent bodes well for job seekers seeking stability and career trajectories. And, as the home of some of the world’s most popular tourist attractions, Orlando never runs out of offering fun things to do.
Tampa earned its No. 4 ranking in part for its 3.3 percent unemployment rate, well below the current 3.9 percent national average. Financial services, information technology, defense and security employers are based here, as is one of Florida’s main ports.
