Let that salt air soak in!
You also have amazing options when it comes to enjoying nature’s playground just outside Verona’s entrance off A1A, Florida’s Atlantic Coast highway. But what if you’re unfamiliar with Ormond by the Sea? Or with beachside living?
We can help. Read on for our beach tips for Verona residents.
Your neighborhood beach
It doesn’t get better than that and it’s right across the street from Verona. Walk, run or grab the bicycle and (safely) cross A1A onto Ormond by the Sea’s golden sands. You won’t get lost thanks to the circa-1940s World War II wooden watchtower that punctuates your view.
The landmark stands near Verona’s Watchtower Drive and Spanish Waters Drive, and was one of hundreds built up and down the East Coast during World War II as part of a civilian effort to spot German submarines and ships. Now a rarity — only three still exist in Florida — the Ormond by the Sea watchtower was restored in 2004. A plaque at its base tells the story.
Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park
It’s only a half-mile south of Verona, right off A1A.
Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park is a Volusia County beachfront park that borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River (also the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway). Hop on that bicycle again, or drive the quick half-mile to free parking and 37 acres of amenities.
Crotty Park gives you all the creature comforts you need for a perfect morning, afternoon or day at the beach. But you’ll also find a four-acre dog park, sports fields, shuffleboard courts, boardwalk trails, basketball, tennis and racquetball courts, restrooms, a playground and more.
North Peninsula State Park
This one’s a a bit further from Verona, but a great option when you’d like to expand your beachside exploration.
North Peninsula State Park is a little over five miles north of Verona on A1A. Its 534 acres connect to the Ormond Scenic Loop, a popular driving and biking route that traverses historic and beautiful marshes, coastal forests and hammocks. You’ll also cross creeks and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
Hit North Peninsula’s three-mile beach for surfing, swimming, surf-casting or shelling.
When you’re ready for a beach break, cross A1A and launch a kayak or canoe from Smith’s Creek Landing. Hike the two-mile Coastal Strand Trail. Go birding, if you haven’t. The park is on the Great Florida and Wildlife Trail.
