A great way to begin or end a Thanksgiving meal is gathering the family around the house and playing a game. For generations we have been told that the history of Thanksgiving was a harvest celebration founded by the Pilgrims and Indians that took place in the autumn of 1621. But, did you know that the three-day feast was not actually the “first Thanksgiving” but simply a gathering? George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789 and later President Thomas Jefferson opposed the holiday. Finally in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. The date has been changed a couple of times, but in 1941 Thanksgiving was sanctioned by Congress as a legal holiday. Very interesting, so see what member of the family really knows their history. You might even be surprised!
