Fall in Florida: Tips for Enjoying the Season

If you’re considering moving to Florida from a different climate, one aspect you might not anticipate is how seasons change in the Sunshine State.

If the calendar says September, it must be time to haul out harvest decor and plunk cinnamon sticks in mulled cider, right?Fall in Florida: Tips for Enjoying the Season

We’re Florida residents too, so allow us to offer a few tips for enjoying a Floridian fall season.

How fast will summer turn to fall?

It depends where you live. Florida is a big peninsula with cooler seasons a bit more pronounced to the north, and more temperate, sub-tropical and tropical year-round warmth to the south.

One thing doesn’t change — the lower humidity and glorious, sunny days everywhere in the Sunshine State during our fall and winter seasons.

They’re a big reason so many people pursue seasonal residences in Florida during the fall and winter months — it’s usually spectacular here!

What’s it like in cooler months?

If you’ve moved to the Sunshine State from a colder climate, fall in Florida fall generally mimics early autumn conditions in other parts of the U.S. — a bit cooler, clearer and drier but still nicely warm.

Florida winters generally feel more like late autumn in cooler climates. Which means you might don a sweatshirt or light jacket, or reach for jeans rather than shorts on some days. And occasional cold fronts sweep through (and don’t stick around). But the year’s coolest months in Florida are prime time for backyard fire pits, or indoor or outdoor fireplaces. Speaking of…

Don’t relegate those backyard fire features to seasonal-only duty! They’re great for marshmallow roasting and homemade S’mores every month of the year!

Use cooler weather to refresh your landscape

You don’t have to forsake autumnal gardening activities you may have enjoyed elsewhere. The fall season remains a good calendar reminder to tackle certain outdoor-living and gardening tasks.

Think planting new perennials, shrubbery or flowering trees. Giving outdoor furniture a good hosing off or scrub-down. It’s also a good time to spruce up flower beds, patio kitchen gardens, or backyard vegetable plots.

While you’re making your autumn outdoor to-do list, think ahead to the winter months – you can enjoy year-round gardening in Florida!

Enjoy seasonal holidays and events

Even more — because you likely won’t have to drag out extra clothing layers to do so!

Late fall temperatures gradually will moderate and reward you with lower humidity, pleasant overnight temps and sparkling, warm days.

Use them to visit local farms to select pumpkins, take hay rides and zig-zag through cornfield mazes. Fall festivals and cultural activities such as art shows are splendid during the autumn months. Celebrate Thanksgiving with a beach picnic!

Putting a new spin on seasonal activities helps you enjoy them even more.
